The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Stieg Larsson

Why she has a dragon tattoo is still a mystery.

I bought this book before I saw the movie but ended up watching the movie before I read the book.  Funny how life works sometimes.  Thought the movie was great and was pleasantly surprised by the subtitles (I didn’t know a lot about this phenomenon at all, least of all that the movie was filmed in Swedish).  Was also surprised by some of the sexual brutality in the film and thought that maybe the Swedes were just playing it up.  Then I read the book and thought that the filmmakers played it down.

I was confused all over.  But I really enjoyed the mystery.

Not being a big mystery reader on a normal day, I did however appreciate all the books Blomkvist was reading in his spare as homage to modern day mystery novelists, including Elizabeth George, Etc.  I didn’t appreciate all the Mac computer terminology Larsson detailed the reader to death over.  Isn’t it enough to say that Lizbeth had a fast computer instead of detailing how many giga-hertz she’s working with and on what model of machine.  I really don’t care.  And by labeling the machine, it will date the book faster.  Being dead, I’m sure Larsson doesn’t much care either.

This book is an example of the rare case when the movie is better than the book.  But not by a large margin.  The reader gets more of an insight into Lizbeth Salander, or the girl with the dragon tattoo, where the movie-watcher only can speculate about how she is feeling.  The ending plays better in the book SPOILER where she figures out she is in love with Blomkvist after all, instead of the movie where she begins a new anonymous life somewhere else.  I’m looking forward to reading the rest of the series to see how their love plays out.  Did not enjoy Blomkvist as James Bond serial lover.  Seriously, can anyone resist going to bed with the man?  Horndog.  They restrained at least two of his ‘relationships’ in the movie version, thank goodness.

I heard there is a controversy over Stieg Larsson’s fourth book in this series being released.  Or who actually wrote the books.

Well, whatever.  This book was good.  Read it. (And see the movie).
